78 Minutes of Summer

Last week, while the rest of the country was melting in the heat wave, us Seattlites were counting out how much "summer" we've had in minutes.  Yes, minutes.  As of July 23rd we had only experienced 78 minutes above 80 degrees.  Last Sunday we finally added on 273 more minutes and now there's even a twitter feed to track it (currently we're holding steady at 351).  Coming from Virginia, the weather definitely feels strange, but if my choices are 68° or 110° then I think I'll just try to be thankful that I'm here.

Hmmm, so let's see, what have I been up to since my last post, besides eating 2.5lbs (not pints) of blueberries?  I had a nice catch-up dinner with Barb & Barnaby & the puppies (who I've missed even though I don't like dogs), I did little bar hopping with some friends in West Seattle (a neighborhood I haven't really explored much), I went for a hike at Oyster Dome (and saw another crazy barefoot hiker), I had some delicious sushi with a new friend in Ballard (another cool neighborhood), I checked out the fruit festival at Pike Place (a little bit of a let down, but I did see kids racing zucchinis just like a box car derby), I went to another geriatric apartment building social, and I took some free zumba classes outside under the space needle.

Then, last night I went to my first ever speed dating event.  It was being hosted by one of the meetup groups and I figured why not?  Unfortunately the organization was terrible.  It was supposed to start at 7:00, but the first round didn't even begin until almost 8:30 and the ratio of guys to girls was way off.  I guess it was to my advantage, but about 15 guys had to go stand in the corner by themselves and wait to get a crack at the ladies and I just felt bad for them.  I was actually super shocked by the sausage fest because from the looks of the sign-up online I thought it was going to be mostly girls.  Although there was certainly quantity, I can't say much about quality...  There was, however, one good looking guy that really stood out in the room amongst the sea of 5'5" Indian guys who work at Microsoft.  Me and the hot guy actually ended up talking for about a half hour while we were waiting for the event to start and it seemed like we kind of hit it off, but then we got split up once the organizers finally got their act together.  Once we broke for "intermission" it was after 9:30 and hot guy had disappeared.  Frankly, I don't blame him for ditching rather since things were so poorly run, but I still wish we'd exchanged info.  Oh, well, maybe I'll see him again at some normal meetup event.
